Cotton + Steel Les Fleurs Fabric – Quick Envelope Throw Pillows

Cotton + Steel Les Fleurs Fabric – Quick Envelope Throw Pillows
Hey hey everyone!
So, when I saw the Cotton + Steel Rifle Paper Co. Les Fleurs fabric (whew! That’s a mouthful!) upon release, I nearly fainted. Seriously. It is soooo much my favorite. It needed more than one place in my life. Clothing, obviously, but I needed to see it all the time! What to do…?
These are the prints I was dyyying to have:

…gorgeous, right!? I have a little secret… Are you feeling like you might neeeed them, too? My friend Kylie is holding a pre-order for them in her shop Sweet Pea Pretties Fabric! And this weekend, there’s a coupon code for 15% off, too! You can find that in her Facebook group. Eek! Gorgeous, high-quality prints at a sale price?! I’m in!
Sapphire blue is and always has been my very favorite color. And last fall I started redecorating my living room upstairs with blue and mustard with magenta accents. I’ve slowly been adding unique things and getting it finished up just right. This spring, we bought this beautiful linen couch (using my ItWorks commissions, of course!) in sapphire blue and the whole room came together. Eek! Though, every time I walked by it I couldn’t help thinking it needed a “pop” of color. I knew I needed pillows. I’m kind of a handy gal, if you hadn’t noticed…
So I knew I was going to make them. Then this fabric came along and it all fell into place! I even made them within a week of receiving the fabric! That NEVER happens. I usually just hoard my fabrics for eternity and then forget why I bought them… Not this time! Ha!

So here’s what I ended up with! The bottom and the top are the canvas versions of the fabrics. The middle one is made of the quilting cottons. I did a quick piecing of them to fit the prints into my living room without having 974 pillows. Ha! That pieced one is backed with a khaki material I’d originally bought to make dress pants for Cade (back when he was in private school and needed uniforms). But, I never got around to it. Shocking, I know.
Aren’t they so pretty?! Eek!
I always think it’s fun to look at where the fabrics and supplies started out. Just a hunk of material and some old (think 10+ years ago in college) throw pillows. And they turned into these lovely new ones! So fun!
These are the grungy pillows I’m using as the forms. The sapphire one on the bottom I was just using for color coordinating purposes.

All of my pieces are cut and ready to be transformed! Want a quick tute for what I did to make these? Super easy.
I measured each of my pillow forms. I had one that was 20″x20″, and two that were 18″x18″. For tutorial purposes, I’ll use the measurements for the 18″.
I measured each of my pillow forms. I had one that was 20″x20″, and two that were 18″x18″. For tutorial purposes, I’ll use the measurements for the 18″.
First, I cut one piece that was an 18″ square. I didn’t add extra fabric for seam allowances because I wanted the pillows to really fill out the case. Plus, my pillows are down-filled, so I know it would take a little squeezing for them to stay fluffy. I didn’t want the edges and corners of the case to look floppy or empty.
For the back “envelope”, I cut two pieces each 12″x18″. You want to do each of those cuts 2/3 of the width of the pillow so that they overlap in the middle.
Next, I took the pieces over to the ironing board. On one of the long sides of each of the back pieces, I folded down 1″ and pressed. Then I folded that over another inch and pressed. I top-stitched each of those.

Apologies for the laaate-night (like 2:30am late…) celly pics here. After pressing all the backs, I pieced the strips together for my one quilted case. I then top-stitched those to give them a nice polished look.
Lastly (and I forgot to snap a picture here), I laid the front panel right side up. I put a back piece right sides together with that. Then I put the other back piece right sides together with the other edge that wasn’t yet covered and overlapped the finished edge of the other back piece. I pinned them, and then serged around each of the four sides. Then voila! Turn them ride sides out and stuff them with your pillow forms! Done! It really didn’t take long to make all three of these. Maybe 2 hours total? And you know I popped in to Facebook off and on while I made them because…well…I’m a crazy person.
Here they are! Done!

And a picture of the backs for you. So easy to just slip the pillow right in there. And easy to take it out, too, if you need to wash your cases! And if you have a small herd of children like I do, you’ll need to wash those cases. Tiny heathens… Ha!

Here is a major photo overload for you of my new pillows in their home! Enjoy!

And a picture of the other half of my living room, too. Just so you can see how it all ties together.
And there you have it! My Cotton + Steel fabrics transformed into beautiful, quick and easy home decor! If you need these prints, make sure to get in on the Sweet Pea Pretties pre-order this weekend and use code: INEEDIT for 15% off your total purchase in her shop!
Thanks for reading!
